The Perlfee is German in origin and was developed by two German breeders in the early twentieth century, a Mr K.Hoffmans (who developed the Lux breed..) and a Mr Deiniger. Although they both produced similar rabbits using different breeds it wasn't until later when the two breeds came together that the breed was called the Perlfee (or Perlfeh as its known in Germany). In the early 1980`s the Perlfee was introduced to the UK and was finally standardised later that decade.
If I thought the Thrianta was hard to find, the Perlfee was near on impossible lol. There were only 2 breeders in the country that anyone new of. One breeder had been unwell himself and his only mating pair, had just mated up. Unfortunately, the other breeder was too far away for me to assess, and he did not have any stock spare.
By chance I heard that a pair of Perlfees had been brought into the country a few months earlier and that the breeder who had them was having a change of mind about keeping them. By Stafford 2000 I was the proud owner of a pair of imported Perlfees and August of the same year we had our first litter (see pics of Shelob and Sauron).
Our buck (Mithrandir pic) went on to win BiS at the Keith Bee Memorial show Rare Variety section at the Garden of England Show. A few months later congratulations were in order to I & A Davies for their Perlfee doe going BiS at Pontefract (see link to RV web page). Tarax Stud have since had success going BiS with Sauron (son of Mithrandir) at the RVRC Stock Show in December 2001.
The Perlfee has a larger following in Germany and its bordering countries but a lot of the information on this breed can be found on the Internet.
This is another breed that will hopefully be going through the standardisation process in the United States in the near future.
