The Hulstlander is of Dutch origin and has Vienna White and Polish in its genealogy background. They are a small rabbit weighing between 5 to 6lb. They have a sparkling white coat and striking pale blue eyes. Hulstlanders originated from the district of the same name and were bred by J. de Graaf. Although accepted in the Netherlands in 1984 they have only recently been introduced to, and Standardised in, the UK.
The Hulstlander is a breed that I introduced to our Stud fairly recently after seeing one at a local show.
Talking to a fellow breeder I discovered that she and another RV member were going to attend a Thrianta and Hulstlander Breeders Day in Holland, and that they would be bringing back 5 pairs. With the help of some of the top Dutch breeders, 10 assorted rabbits were imported into the UK. Although Unstandardised at the time, they soon attracted a following. With Trina Cooke and Judy LeMarchants perseverance the breed was standardised in September 2002.
Personality wise, the Hulstlanders always make us smile. They have the Polish's trait of wanting to stand up and look at the world on their back legs, either propping themselves up in a corner or falling over backwards! They love their heads being stroked and are always inquisitive.
Our first litters arrived in January 2003 (Jalona had 5 baby Does and Quisiria had a Buck and a Doe).
Yet another breed to find it's way to the US, some were exported from the UK to a US breeder at the end of January 2003. We hope they are successful in establishing and Standardising the breed there.
