The Sussex was developed by a friend of ours, Ms Judy Le Merchant. They originated from a Californian and Lilac cross in 1986 that was intended to improve the point colour of the Lilac Californian. The original Sussex were descendents from a Brown (Chocolate) Tortoiseshell doe that appeared in a second generation of the above mentioned cross.
The Sussex Gold was standardised in 1991, followed by the Cream.
The Sussex is a medium sized (3.84--3.39Kg), shaded rabbit with the shadings to be of the same depth of colour as the body, and confined to the face, ears, legs, belly and undertail.
The Gold has a cream undercolour, deepening evenly to red-gold top colour and lightly ticked with cream and milk chocolate. Shadings are also milk chocolate, and the eyes are brown.
The Cream has a pale cream undercolour that deepens to a rich pinkish beige top colour. This is lightly ticked with lilac and pale cream, with the shadings being lilac, and eyes a lilac grey.
This fairly timid, but friendly breed and my love of 'chocolate' coloured rabbits, fuelled my enthusiasm to participate in the development of the Chocolate Tortoiseshell Miniature Lop.
